    Thumbs down "Knotty Not" FAIL!

    In the Single Ring Suspension discussion I proposed an alternative to the descender ring, calling it the Knotty Not. First was a simple Z-shaped version and then one with a closed eye at one end.

    I hung on them every night for about a week at home. When I took the hammock down and examined the Knotty Knot, I discovered that the load at the end towards that hammock had bent the device.

    In the image below is an unused device followed by two used ones which show the bending problem.

    Bottom line...DO NOT USE A KNOTTY NOT AS A SUSPENSION DEVICE!

    Good on ya for being the guinea pig and better yet that no one was hurt in the experimentation process!

    Anyone need a 3' aluminum rod?

    If I use the SRS, and it'a big if, I'll stick with the descender rings.

    All the greats fail before they are great! The idea seems sound though. Possibly a different metal?

    After seeing the Dutch Biner fail in the same sort of way, I think the continuous ring is probably all that's going to put up with the forces involved here.

    Knotty;

    Thanks for the insights here. We often underestimate the physics and force involved in hanging.

    Thanks for the heads up. I've noticed deformation on the cheap aluminum biners minus a gate that I used for about a week or two on and off on a hammock I had inside.
    Check out the Knot Bone at whoopieslings.com, verrrry interesting, but I worry if these have squared edges.

    I think anyone who regards those cheap snaplinks as biners misses the point. They are not strong enough for anything but hanging keys.

    Thanks everyone. The concept of the Knotty Not works but it would need to be made of a different material. Titanium or steel would be up to the task but for me it's not an idea worth pursuing any further.

    FWIW, my testing was done on a hammock hung indoors with a row of interlocking foam mats below. Had a complete failure occurred there would have been no injury.

    There is another use for the Knotty Not but you could also just use a carabiner. You can install it on a structural ridgeline and use it to adjust the length. The loads on an SRL should be low enough to not deform the aluminum. Number of wraps determines how much shortening. On my hammock, two wraps shortened the line by 2", four wraps 4". Two wraps shown in pic.

    For clearity it wasn't the Dutch Biner that bent, it was the Dutch Ridgeline biner. I think the DB woud have worked.
