First Night with the Snugpak Hammock Cocoon with Travelsoft Filling

    Hello all!
My boys and I spent Thanksgiving Eve (is that really a date?) trying out our sleep systems at the Isle du Bois state park.
This was our first time with a cocoon so there was a little trial and error.
    Here's what I remember...

    The good
    The cocoon is very warm.
Overnight temps were in the upper 50's, it was very windy, and I spent the night with the zipper open.
I slept in only my undies and was still very warm.
The stuff sack is big enough for my entire sleep system.
I will not keep the rainfly in there because of the stakes, but it does fit.
Inside the cocoon there is a baffle for the zipper and an internal pocket for storage.
Once you get the hang right, you can put your lightweight items in the cocoon with you under the hammock.
For my boys the cocoon was the perfect length.

    The not-so-good
I like to hang low which compressed the cocoon against my back.
I had to give some slack to one of the ends and all was good.
The end tabs are not strong at all.

    The its-not-the-cocoon's-fault
So my oldest missed the hammock and crawled into the cocoon.
The end tabs ripped on one end.
Obviously they are not weight bearing.
The cocoon is shaped with a head end and a foot end.
It's not clearly marked so I just crawled in my hammock and immediately felt cramped.
I was about to start cussing when I flipped around and realized the inside pocket is by the head end.

Overall, I really like the cocoon.
It is definitely warm enough for my climate (north Texas).
I can't tell if this could go sub-freezing alone but there is room to add many overquilts or a mummy bag if need be.
I have another camp scheduled for early January so I'll see if the weather cooperates with some low temps.
I'm still trying to decide if I'll need to insulate one of the ends during a deep cold.
I didn't have to this time but may have to once the temps go low.
I say "one end" because the other end can bunch up around the whoopie sling without any issues.
I believe this is definitely worth the money.
I was able to drop the amount of crap I had to carry by almost half!

Feel free to ask any questions.

    Take care and hang loose!

I just pulled the trigger and bought the snugpak cocoon and quilt...I'm planning on getting the Loco Libre 10 Long Hot soon, but I want something asap to go with my Dutch DL 11ftr as I am transitioning out of my HH Explr Dlx. Probably wouldn't have done this but for your detailed review! Thanks!

PS what is the pack size for the hammock cocoon ? the website lists it as 300cm x 85cm that can't be right..right?

    Sorry for the late response.
I just measured one fully packed and compressed (with hammock, slings, and strapping) and standing on end it is 40cm tall and 79cm in diameter.
Total weight (using a crappy bathroom scale) is roughly 5.5lbs.
I'm sure the ultralight guys laugh at that but it is better than what I had.

PS - I'm from Texas so typing in Metric made me cringe :-)

I used the coccoon with the underblanket together and went to 25 degrees. It's big and bulky, but kind of a cool item.

My coccoon had bad stitching and ripped some. VT Army Navy is sending me a new one, their customer service was very easy to deal with. They're also sending a package to ship the old coccoon back to the manufacturer.

Hey Speedogomer...did you mean both were big and bulky? I just read a good review on the under blankie. Sounded like it might be the same size as my diy climashield UQ

The underblanket is quite a bit smaller than the cocoon, and packs significantly smaller.

I just ordered the SnugPack UQ today. Haven't been able to sleep in cold conditions yet, so i'm pretty excited to get started.
