Dude, that was a seriously funny video! "SQUIRREL!"

I'm just getting started taking Lars-Erik, my 2 y.o rottweiler/german sheperd/briard-mix out with me (weird name for a 100 pound dog, I know..). He's been going to the woods with the family and the rest of the pack before, though not alone with "daddy" so he's a bit insecure still, but it's coming along nicely I think.

I bring a kind of a sock/tent kind of thing for the hammock, it's an old popup tent that I removed the poles from, turned it upside down and modded a bit to suit this purpose. I really should put some pics of it in my gallery, keeps slipping my mind..
He sleeps just below/to the side of me, on a ccf pad, and he has his own little net window that he can peek out of if he so wishes. Brought an extra sleepingbag for him just in case, and went for a trial run in -10c a few weeks ago. Worked out absolutely great, and I was real proud of him in the morning for not having made a single sound all night.

It's just more fun to take the dog along, and threads like these makes me want to take things a little bit further.

Great info and stories everybody, happy hanging!

    Cheers / SwedeMix & Lars-Erik

I too have had issues with skeeters and biting gnats eating Ivy alive, but this year I treated a bandana with permethrin and tie it around her neck. It worked very well and lasts for over a month of continuous use. It worked so well that I treated another bandana to tie around my neck. I also treated her pack and a lightweight "bug" jacket (jacket not so much for warmth as it is for the skeeters).

    Hammock Hiking with Dog--sleep arrangements

If you don't mind the smell of cloves, they make a natural liquid to repel fleas and other bugs. (Like advantix but all natural) It really does work great, just beware that the smell is STRONG! Not for use on indoor only dogs! Lol

I think my Assuie is ready for outdoor sleeping. I let out in the yard last night to take care of business and he dug a small hole in the garden and curled up to go to sleep. Took me 10 minutes to convince him to come back in the house. I finally had to bribe him with a dog biscuit. If I can manage it this weekend, maybe I'll pull out the tent and try an over night with him in that. I'll have to work him up to hiking with me with a hammock. I know he'll hike, I've taken him to the local trails and he leads the way no problem.

I have been kicking myself since Jan trying to solve this very issue... as I need to put my dog on a leash at night if he gets up he quickly tangles in the guys... 1/2 way thru the night I yanked the guys as wind died. I really am over thinking this, as I can use a poncho and blanket and 1/2 a blue pad. maybe string the door to the tree..

I've just gotten my first hanger, am looking forward to doing some camping including some S24O trips, and am anxiously awaiting my next best friend from a rescue.

    This thread is awesome!

a great way to get them to stop that is to try bitter or cayenne pepper on your lines... do it with a practice or throwaway set, and let your dog get that awful taste in their mouth. eventually the dog won't associate good feelings when chewing on your camp gear, so they will stop. I make a little mixture of olive oil and cayenne pepper, and rub it into the leash (paracord, webbing, etc.) and try to get the dog to play tug of war.. it doesn't take much time at all for them to figure out putting things in their mouth is a bad idea.

My Pit-mix got ahold of a spool of mason line. Aparently linear obstructions are the worst kind. It turned into about a $6000 spool of twine.

Re: Hammock Hiking with Dog--sleep arrangements

For people who use their dog as a space heater in their hammock, do their nails ruin the hammock fabric? Seems like they'd tear it to shreds trying to position themselves
