Hammock Hiking with Dog--sleep arrangements

That idea really sounds nice to me too!.

We just rescued my first trail dog, a Borgi, from TN last week. This thread has been crazy helpful.

He can fray webbing in minutes with those teeth, so making him carry the shielded cable, suggestion, made me grin. +1 to that!

If you worried about your dog's claws, you can get dog boots or socks that would probably better protect the hammock. I haven't tried them before, but I think I will next time I take mine out.

The booties are great, I used to make them when we lived in alaska. two pair of toddler socks will work for this purpose.

Attached is how Charlie, 7 yr old Chocolate Lab handles a bit of rain with the hammock. I agree with the earlier post about a longer lead. 20 ft light cloth rope with a small clip at end works great. Gives her the freedom to relieve herself if needed in the middle of the night and if she wants additional air, she moves further out. The blanket is a light fleece that she carries in her pack.

after conversing with Whiskeyjack about dogs and hammocks I was struck by an idea. Now I am a tent lover who is loving hammocks and see the potential for failure with a dog in the hammock or tied to a person in the hammock or being eaten by bugs or frozen by wind and snow. I have visited a native community in northern Ontario(way north, winter roads or fly in only) and they cant tie dogs up in their little town because no matter how big or vicious the dog was, it got taken by wolves.
back to my idea, it is light weight, perches right under the hammock....grounded. a pole-less tent. made out of extra ripstop and no-see-um mesh. make it rectangle base, triangular ends with a single door. can seal the bottom for the "bathtub bottom" tents have. guy lines to tie off to trees front and back like the hammock is. 4 pegs. this way it can be made to whatever size dog someone has, can have a pad for colder ground, and is light enough to fit in a pocket

Great thread.

I took my buddy PJ with me and a friend on a 30 mile backpacking trip this summer. It rained for most of the first day and his first night on the trail was cold one. He ended up sleeping with me in the hammock. Well, he slept. I did not.

The other two nights he was fine sleeping just below me. I think 1) he was tired from the hike and 2) wasn't wet when we went to bed. With snow camping just around the corner I have to find a solution for "wet, but warm" and I'm leaning towards an enclosed 2'x2' shelter with a durable bottom and a closed cell mat that would have a ridgeline running off of my hammock suspension so I could drape some insulation over it.

If I come up with a decent solution I'll post a pic.
