    Found a Keeper?

So a buddy and I were trying to convince our girlfriends to go on a small overnight or couple night canoeing trip down the Rappahanock in VA. Neither of them are campers or paddlers by any stretch. My buddy's girlfriend was fairly easily convinced so long as it wasn't too hot or too buggy (we stick with the disclaimer that we have no way to predict bugs but that "it shouldn't be too bad'. . My girlfriend initially said she wasn't too sure because she had never paddled before. I eased her worries on that and then asked her how she wanted to camp. (She never has really taken to the hammock for more than a relaxing 30 minute stint). Her only response was to laugh and tell me that I better get another hammock because she was stealing mine. Yea....I found a keeper.

The Rappahanock used to be a real good river to canoe. The last time we took a group of scouts, the water level was so low, we hiked half the trip, or at least that's how it felt. We kept getting hung on the rocks, and would have to get out and drag the canoes. We put in up at Kelly's Ford, with the intention of camping at the confluance of the Rapid an. Then take out the next day at Motts Run.It's about a 25 mile run. So I would suggest to check the water level before you go. If the water is OK, it is a really great trip. We now go down the James river, put in at the Hardware River WMA, which is about 5 miles below Scottsville, and take out in Columbia, about 17 miles.

Sounds like you have a great one, willing to do the trip and hang with ya. Good luck on your trip, when you do go.....RR

I've heard that before about the water level on the Rappa. We were acutally going to be doing from Ely's Ford down to the Outfitter's dock in Fredricksburg. It's only 19 miles...leisurely overnighter for the camping impaired. My girlfriend actually has a completely unnatural fear of the James based on the "yuckiness" of it around Richmond. Not sure time frame. Definitely once it gets warmer around May or so. The cold doesn't bother me, but I'm the one who will kick me out of bed if she has a horrible trip.

I haven't discussed it with the others, but I'm aiming for mid-May...probably the weekend of the 18th.

Pah, the real question will be: Did she enjoy it and want to do it some more, or did she hate it and never wants to do it again? ;p
