Tarp and Hammock?

Does anyone know of a material that could be used as a tarp and hammock ?

I had someone ask me to make a hammock for them that could also used as a tarp in inclement wearther. I explained that they didn't want to be sitting in their own sweat as is wouldn't breathe. They want all their gear to be dual purpose.

So is there a material that would shed water when used as a tarp and be strong enough to hold someone when used as a hammock?

I just got some 1.9oz DWR ripstop from Noah Lamport. I covered a cup of water with it and put a rubber band around it and hung it upside down. Started it about 6:00 last night and left it. No water leaked through even by 11:00 this morning. I know it probably won't be perfect, but if they are needing something for an emergency or aren't planning on using it for a tarp too much, I'm sure it would work.

The challenge in your question comes from the fact that the tarp must be waterproof but it is very desirable for the hammock material to be breathable to avoid waking up in a pool of sweat. So serious compromises are necessary for what you are looking for.

The person i would be making this for understands that it would not be breathable. they just want the hammock/tarp to serve more than one purpose.
has anyone had any experience with the impetus material from diy gear supply? would it be strong enough? what if it were double layered?

I have made hammocks and a tarp from 1.9 ripstop.
I know, its not waterproof. For me its never been a problem. I've had it in the rain several times and probably 99% of the rain runs off the outside. About 1% comes through and that runs down the inside.

I know a way to make a tarp. lowes has some tyvext that makes a good diy tarp.
