I finally ordered some nanolite poles to make this happen! The poles are gonna be @7 ft 4 inches and I will post again later with the updated weights and photos. I am planning to use Dutch hooks and keyrings for the connection to the tarp, but we will see... I am slow, but I will get it done.
I ordered an extra set of poles, so I may make a set of these available for sale.

I finished my mods and I bought a bunch of extra nanolites. I have not had time to test the new poles yet, but I am getting rid of the extra nanolites here:

I will post photos when I get a free hour to play around in the yard...(crosses fingers)

I'm looking to make a set of these myself, and tracked down a source of the 13" poles: tentpoletechnologies.com/?page_id=638
Are these the poles you used?
They are the same poles, but the tip is the non locking version. It is just a 1/2 inch long solid aluminum billet, that you can drill through.

This is not a finished project, but I finally got a chance to put it up in the yard. I just used what I had laying around...
I just drilled holes through the end pieces of the nanolites and attached rings and mini biners for the connection. I will probably go with soft shackles later for the connections.
I will leave it up tonight so that I can tweak it tomorrow after work.

Very cool...been following this thread for a while. Looks perfectly taut. What's the weight of the poles?
I tried this on my tarp today, looks like a great solution. I tried rigging trekking poles over the tarp but wasn't completely satisfied with that. I was a little worried about how much the poles were required to bend but they seemed to be ok.
I think I'm going to try and put these ends on the poles like you have on tent poles
Then I'm going to put the matching grommet on grosgrain and sew it to the tarp pullouts. Then all I'll have to do is insert the poles into the grommet just like setting up a tent.
