Can a hammock be too long?

It won't become uncomfortable with more length for sure. Just bulkier, heavier, require trees further apart and as you mentioned, potential tarp issues. 2.5 inches of coverage on either side will work, but its close and will have more issues than usual if there's wind.

Remember, he is talking about fabric length. Factor in the hammock ridgeline length at about 83% and your are talking a length of 9'6" which easily fits under a 12' tarp.

Update, I cut the end off about four inches and rolled it over twice re-himmed the the channel, re-whipped it and it came out 1" under eleven feet. I haven't got to lay in yet though. Probably will be tomorrow. Thanks for the help.

The nice thing about a longer hammock is that you can always shorten it! Enjoy your hammock!
