    Jan. 16 2013 - Winter Overnigher.. almost

Disclaimer: No hammock, sorry.. had a bad experience last time out, weather was too nasty today to experiment so I had planned to sleep on the ground.

Today in New Hampshire, 4 to 6" of new snow was in the forecast. It was to snow "lightly" throughout the day start around 4am and ending around 4pm. I had not been out since November and was getting some cabin fever so I thought this would be a good opportunity to test out my new winter kit, and a new Molly MacPack, in a snow storm situation.

Unfortunately, things did not go as planned and I made it as far as setting up camp and cutting down three standing dead trees. The snow was quite wet and falling harder than I expected by this time. I was just not in the mood to process firewood all day in these conditions so I packed up and came home. I had wanted a fire to last from at least 5pm/6pm til midnight or 1am and, in this mostly maple, ash, and pine forest, would have required me to process a fair amount of wood.

It was still nice to get out and I will be back there soon, just not when the heavens are dumping snow on me. The MMP performed beautifully, I had a full winter load out and 3L water bladder, and the pack fit me like a glove.

Here are a few photos from today:

I like those shoes. I could make one efficient dead-fall trap out of those. MSR?
If it moves, you can eat it. No promises you will think it tastes good.

    Yes sir, Shangri-La 3.

I might go back out on Saturday. I camp on private property that I have permission to use so I just left the shelter and tarp up since it was only going to be a few days.

I'm heading out this weekend Friday-Monday and the idea of a tent also keeps popping into my mind due to lows down to 12°F and 30mph winds.

That's one benefit of tents, easy to block 100% of the wind WITH NO EXTRA WORK. I'm not going to mess with a sock, pile up snow, etc. But, since I can no longer stand to sleep on the ground, hammock it will be!
