If the hammock has a bugnet or excess side material that flops, tie outs help a lot.

For me it also depends on the hammock. My WBBB feels better when tied out because on the one side the bugnet is pulled away from my face and on the other side it keeps the shelf away from me when it has gear in it. My Switchback LH on the other hand does not feel that different vs when the tie outs are secured.

For some, it's about claustrophobia...they just barely tolerate being zipped up in a bug net to start with. Let that net drape over their faces, and you've got a runaway. It doesn't bother me, and I've long since removed the tie-outs from my 'bird.

I quit using tieouts when I got into winter hammocking. The uq fit so much better without them. After a while, I realized I quit using them in the other seasons as well.

Depends on the hammock really, I prefer the simplicity of not having tie outs.

If you had 2 (one at shoulder height one side and one at knee position opposite side), this would at least give you the option of using them if you felt you needed to. And I don't even know if those 2 tieouts would move the needle on a scale, so it shouldn't boil down to a weight issue.
I don't bother with them till bug season, they take up the sag from the bugnet and keep it up off your face.
One thing I use more than the tie outs is the little piece of grosgain that gathers the bugnet out of the way when not in use. Most WBBB's have them, well worth adding.

I like to swing, which I can't do with tie outs. That's why the Lawson sits on the shelf. It needs tie outs for good stability.
