    Whoopie Braid Deformation

On one of my sets of whoopies I've noticed the braid starting to deform a little where the tail comes out of the bury. It looks like rather than being a cylindrical braid, like Amsteel usually is, the individual strands have straightened out and simply run paralell to each other for about an eighth of an inch. The braid looks fine just above and below that spot.

Now obviously this is because of the load on that spot, and I've read that this is the weak point on a whoopie sling, so that makes sense... But is this normal? I have never heard anyone on here say a whoopie has failed so I'm not terribly concerned... But I also wouldn't care to be the first.

    Any thoughts here?

Unless the fibers themselves are actually deforming I don't see a problem.
    YMMV

My whoopies do the same thing. I think everything will be ok as long as the fibers aren't actually ripping.

OK, thanks guys... I figured that was the case, but after reading Amsteel's quote about that being the weakest point in the whoopie it made me a little nervous. That's the only downside of hammocks; any doubt in your suspension can affect your quality of sleep. I will sleep easy again, thanks to your help!

It can take a while to gain confidence in that little bitty amsteel line to hold you up.

I bought some Dynaglide a few weeks ago knowing lots of hangers use it successfully. Each time I sit down to make UCR's or whoopies out of it, I pick it up, look at it, think "I'll never have peace of mind hanging from this" and walk away.

That's kind of my thought... I'm sure I could save some weight by cutting back on my suspension a bit, but as is it weighs around five ounces and is rated at 1000 lbs (the webbing being the weakest point at a 1000 lb rating) and that gives me peace of mind... Why risk losing sleep if it's only going to save me a couple ounces?

It's kind of like my first aid kit; I could ditch a few ounces by not taking it, because I have literally never used it... But the peace of mind it offers is worth the weight.
