Rigging tarp for cold and wind

Ok, as simply as it seems, I thought I had better ask.

We're taking some scouts camping this weekend and I'll hopefully be in my hammock. We have no snow and the weather forecast is for 14* w/ winds of 15-25 and gusting 35 mph.

Since I don't have snow to help build up the bottom edge, I assume you just have to rig the tarp low enough so you can get the side as low to the ground as possible? I'm using an Old Man Winter tarp. I guess my fear is having to rig everything do low to cut wind that I'll be duck walking to get under the tarp and have to be really careful not to drag my UQ on the ground.

    Sound right? Suggestions?

Sounds right... You can always hang a little higher up in the tarp that way your not on the ground... Seems to me like discomfort for getting in and out might be worth it when your warm and toasty in the morning... I would pick warm and toasty night over easy and quick set up...

You can always pitch a little higher, instead of wider, that would let you stand and still be protected, Although I would make darn certain to pull out the middles at that point other wise they may be compressing your down with the wind...

If it's not gonna rain or snow you can do a porch mode kind of style and put one side flush to the ground and the other up in the air as high as needed.

Popular question today. Must be Friday.

You don't need snow and you don't need to make your tarp cramped by putting it down as low as possible. Just use whatever is laying around on the ground. Should be plenty of leaves on the ground right now, so build a skeleton wall of twigs and sticks using leaves as the mortar in-between. It will block most of the wind and leave you with room to stand. Site selection is always the most important thing. After that, it is just a matter of tweaking the site for the conditions.

No snow forecasted. I didn't think about going high and narrow. That would work well to if I have someplace to tie the tarp side pull-outs too.

12° and windy vs tarp pitched correctly (I hope), 0° HG Incubator, UQP, Jacks R' Better Torso pad, Thermarest Lite sit pad. Hopefully I'll win.

This will be my coldest hang to date

I've never been to the camp we're going to so I'm not sure what I'll have for site selection.

Nice idea about making a stick/leaf wall!

I have rigged the OMW tarp with a 11' gathered end hammock before staked to the ground,,,still plenty of room inside to move around...You will have no problems. Happy Hanging.

Great idea. I keep meaning to grab another one of these! If you look at my avatar, the wind picked up that night and I used the little 5x7 to create a door on one end. It worked perfectly! Luckily I have a Superfly on order so that won't be an issue next time though.
