First winter hang in 2 weeks! Sort of worried...

Hey guys! Been lurking for awhile, but don't post often. I've done plenty of hanging in the summer, but never been out overnight in anything less than 45 degrees. In 2 weeks, I'm going with some friends to Virgin Falls in Sparta, TN. None of us have ever done any winter hiking before, so it should be interesting. I'm expecting a high of 50ish and low of 30ish.

I plan on hanging in my back yard one night next week just to get a feel for it. It should be in the mid-20's then, so if I can handle that then I can surely handle 30 degrees for a few nights.

During the summer, I usually take:
    - ENO DN hammock w/ whoopie slings
    - Rain tarp
    - 20 degree mummy sleeping bag
    - CCF pad from Walmart
    - Hot water bottle in my sleeping bag
    - Aside from the clothes I wear while hiking, I usually just take shorts and an extra pair of socks to sleep in.

    1) I'm planning on taking a light jacket for during the day and thermal underwear to sleep in. Will that suffice?
    2) I'm a bit limited on money right now, so I can't make any big purchases (would love an UQ). Any cheap items I could buy that would help me stay warm?
    3) Any other general tips for the cold weather?
    - Tommy Pirtle

I've spent a few nights just under 30* this Winter and honestly I've been surprised at how warm I've been. My set up is very similar to yours and I've intentionally slept in must athletic shorts just to see if I could... So far no problems. My only advice would be to sleep on your coat, with it under the pad and the sleeves around your shoulders. This seems to really help keep my shoulders insulated since they don't stay on the pad...

I think you'll be fine. I always take a fleece sleeping bag insert, but I have yet to use it.

I'm assuming you've thought about it but just to remind you that if it's every one's first time, have a bail out option. It's easy to get caught off guard by underestimating the weather.

I've gone in to the mid 30's with a very similar setup, the only difference being the hammock used. Just remember to keep your head and feet warm and you should be good.

^Very good point. My last trip got down around 25* and I ended up throwing on a balaclava midway through the night to keep my head warm. I was glad I had that with me.

well if you have a JCP near you. They have down jackets right now, 650 down, for $14/$15 buy two and take with you for added security if you do not have time to sew or velco them together to make an UQ.

I just got back from JCP with 5 of them. Told wife to stop on her way home from work and grab some more.
When the wife asks, I simply say "Shug made me do it".

Oh wow... Remember the conversation, but somehow forgot that you were actually in Frederick too!

Thanks again for the heads up on the jackets, I left plenty for you!

think the thing to think about is having too much, rather than not enough if weight is issue then dont go to far, usually you have to carry more in the winter time, layers of clothes rather than just a jacket and winter pants, 2 pairs of good wool socks if your feet gets cold its gonna suck, fire is key you would be amazed how a hot meal and a fire lifts your spirits in the winter, even if your cold, as is the place you deside to hang, get out of the wind if you can dig down into the snow snow shovel is essential if its deep, if not bring your tarp down low, whiskey helps too ha ha ha best thing is being out there is awesome,,but dont take my word try it
