    Single or double layer hammock?

Is there an advantage to a double layer hammock using light weight ripstop over using a heavy ripstop? It seems to me there would negligible weight savings. Is it warmer? Less stretch. More comfort? It certainly isn't cost.

In addition to providing additional weight limits, a second layer allows for the placement of mats or other potential insulating materials between the layers.

I will occasionally supplement my torso length UQ with a layer of reflectix or foam between my 2 layers for insulation. Most times I am happy without doing such, but 2 layers gives me the option.

My wife loves to have her thermarest between her 2 layers because it keeps the sides of the hammock away from her face.

I agree that the second layer is not a great weight penalty, but for gram weenies, it is meaningful enough to prefer a single layer with a UQ.

One advantage of single layer is during the summer...the wind will cut right through a single layer providing some relief from the heat, where the double provides a bit more resistance to the wind.

I've seen a couple double layer hammocks with damage to the outside layer like snags, abrasion, holes, etc. They were still usable for short term, but in needed repaired or replaced.
In one case, I think the damage was severe enough that a single layer hammock would have failed and ended a trip.

    Qutoe from BIAS:
"Double Layer Mod - This is a second, sewn bit of fabric that creates a reinforced layer with an opening for inserting pads for warmth. Double layers also reinforce the hammock and give it 150 lbs. of additional weight capacity. When selecting this mod along with a Knotty Mod, it is important to note if you prefer to lie head left, feet right across the hammock's diagonal line or if you prefer head right, feet left. Double layer hammocks cannot be flipped over to reverse the placement. It also affects placement of the opening in which to insert a pad."

I am also debating for single vs double. And I am not a gram weenie... If I was I would cut my testicle off as I am not using it anyway

Anyway, I was actually thinking about that diagonal lie and I don't want to start a new thread as its somewhat connected. Do you have preference? Left head and right feet or vice versa?

Why can't you flip a double layer? I flip my lite owl from time to time.

That's only with the knotty mod....if you flip it the knotty mod reverses sides....head left becomes head right.
Everyone ought to believe in something....I believe I'll go set up the hammock!

Oh...Ya, it switches which side is head and foot. I thought there was something about the way it was sewn or something? I thought it might hurt something.
