I just roll mine up in a long cigar... And it hangs on the outside of my pack... When I had it down at 18* it rolled up inside my CCF pad and attached to the bottom of the pack... I don't use mine too terribly much, just down past 40* or when the wind is bad... Which for Texas strong winds and cold weather is atypical...

Something to keep in mind....a sock shouldn't be snug or you promote condensation issues. It seems like those who have experimented with socks (Medicine Man, Lost Biker, Hangnout, etc) have found that roomy helps with minimizing condensation.
Lost Biker recently made one with a waterproof bottom, specifically meant to contact the ground.
The DWR fabric should be fine. My sock has DWR and have had no issues so far.
