Hah! That's probably about right.
I'd be interested in an IA hang....just not really a winter camping set up.
Even if you don't plan on spending the night, stop on over and get to know the neighbors. I'm not real big on winter camping either, but will be there at least for a while. I plan on bringing a bunch of firewood, get up a fire to sit around and meet some of you who post here. Camping should be for enjoyment, not as an endurance test, or to prove yourself to anyone. Mostly depending on the arrival of a zero degree underquilt, whether I stay the night to try it out or not.
Why not plan a spring group hang in May? Group hangs are such fun and I always learn something and see some cool gear. BTW, We were just up in Marshalltown, Cedar Rapids, and Grinnell for a couple of weeks, when they had 6-8 inches of snow and it dropped down to minus 8. Husband grew up in Tama/Toledo. I was sure glad to get home.
Keep movin', keep believing and enjoy the journey!
Hang in early may During Mushroom season? Yea,baby! Sounds good to me. Mushroon feed and hang. Lets make it happen.
While we are talking specifically about central Iowa, where are people's favorite hanging spots? Honestly, I've never even done an overnight in IA, as I usually either go back to MO or am camping during a road trip to save a few bucks.
My favorite place to hang in Iowa... granted it's the only place I've hung in Iowa.... is yellow river state forest. That place is pretty nice and seems to work well for group hangs.
The camper formerly known as HikingDad...
+1 on that Hiking Dad. Believe we met at the yellow river hang. Mostly I'm hanging in the Black Hills on a GPAA gold claim, or the Big Horns of Wyoming. Where I scoped out in the Ledges looks perfect, but usually I avoid campgrounds due to the crowds, 2 and 4 legged. Plus I'm just too stingy to pay to get outdoors when there is so much free area. As things unfold for this hang, It doesn't look like I'll be spending the night. There's a ice fishing contest at Clear Lake Sat. and it rquires an o-dark-30 start. I will bring over some firewood Fri. afternoon and get up a campfire to sit around and visit with whoever shows up. Prob'ly hang both my Clarks for folks to look over. Maybe a chance to convert some of the ground dweller convention people. It will be nice to meet some of you who post from around central Iowa, come on over.
Hey, I know this is not necessary since it is a public campsite, but I'd be willing to post over at the bushcraft forum how many HF'ers might be showing up. They were asking for a head count. Maybe's are ok to mention too.
