    DIY peapod

I took an older 15 degree sierra design down bag (3 lbs) and had my amazing wife modify it so that my gathered end hammock (grand trunk UL) would slide through. The bag functions like a peapod. It works great.

I was worried about cutting into a down bag, but she made the incisions by first sewing around where the cut was going to be made (like a giant button hole) and then once we cut the slit she lined the hole with grosgrain. So then when we cut the fabric no down escaped. The shoulder slit sits between my shoulders and my head. That location causes the hole to get taunt when I'm in the hammock and closes up so there is no draft or cold spot.

This is a very easy to set-up, comfortable, warm set up. I'm 5'10 180 lbs with broad shoulders and it fits me fine.

Does this affect your lay in the hammock. It seems like it would constrict the hammock so you would get little diagnal lie.

It does affect the lay a bit. You can't sleep diagonal with this setup, you gotta sleep straight with the hammock fabric. The hammock is hung more taunt (no structural ridgeline) than you would if you were trying to trying to get a good diagonal flat lay. With the hammock fairly taunt the lay isn't too bad. Their a slight curve but it's not uncomfortable. Set the footend higher and that helps. Your body is complete supported and there is no pressure on your hips or shoulders.

I've gotten better lays than the picture shows. This was my first quick setup. The footend should be higher and the sleepingbag head end should be further up the hammock.

Very nice job. I did not think of doing the head end like the foot only a larger slot

    Very nice...

...and the bag will still function if you need to go to ground.
