Excellent info. My wife and I, plus 2 of our good friends are planning this for late April. Thanks to your report I'm kinda leaning on going the Dog Hole route to Raven's Point due to it being our first time going straight through (not to mention our first hammock camping trip). We can always go back and tackle the rocks later! I figure this adds a little under a mile to the hike, pretty close you think?

Actually, it only adds .1 or .2 miles. And the route is much easier. Your climb up to the rim at Dog Hole only brings you maybe 25-300 feet up. If you stay on the main Fiery Gizzard trail, besides the rocks, you also drop further down into the gorge, so your climb up to the rim is 500-600 feet.
