Start out enjoying the Grundy Day Loop at Grundy Forest or the Climbers Loop at Foster Falls. Shorter, but a good place to get used to carrying your gear. And very high reward views and sights for your mileage.

You could also walk the 2.5 miles from Foster up the Gizzard to Laurel Branch Gorge and maybe walk down in a ways and back up. It's only .2 miles down to the creek, but it lets you experience a steep climb out and maneuvering in rocks, both of which would be helpful for conditioning at Savage Gulf.

Yeah, I got in a good hike on the Duncan Ridge Trail just after New Years, and now this trip. I have three or four more planned by the end of March.

It's not hard in this region, especially in the gorge country of Tennessee's Cumberland Trail. The country is elevated, about 2000-3000 feet (600-900 meters) up, with deep gorges (or gulfs or canyons, whichever you prefer). Streams flow along the plateau, then turn into pronounced waterfalls when they hit the rim. You get quite a few more waterfalls than in the Appalachian chain 50 or so miles to the east.

    Arg BP,

You are killing me with these trails that I keep adding to my to-do list. I have no idea how or why I never got to this trail while growing up near that area.

Thanks for the great narrative and picture sharing. Keep them coming.

    Thumbs up

Great trip report, Bearpaw! Thanks for sharing! The Fiery Gizzard was mine and my wife's very first backpacking experience, about 20 years ago. I led a hike there as recently as October or November.

By Saturday it should clear again. Definitely by Sunday. I'm considering going back to hike Carter Forest, Grundy Lake, and the Climbers' Loop at Foster.
