There will be a slight increase in weight as opposed to my prior setup, but I believe the hammock will be a dryer and possibly more comfortable experience.
It's funny, when I first started looking into hammocks my biggest worry was that I would get wet in any storm that came by. I just felt more exposed. Through a little experience I've come to find that if I set things up properly both me and my gear actually stay more dry in a hammock than in a tent.

Been a long time cowboy camper. I hate tents but don't love sleeping on swampy grounds. This is when the hammock came into play! No better way to hang yourself out to dry when it's swampy.

    Ugh...too many reasons...

    Cool factor.
    Light weight.
    Trees readily available.
    No worries about grounders.
No roots, rocks or other nasties..
But most of all, blown out rotator cuffs on both sides make getting up off the ground after a nights sleep, really challenging.
Yes, my pack weighs 70lbs, but it's all light weight gear....

Reading the WhiteBlaze AT forum and hearing from the hammock hangers how much better their backs were after switching to a hammock on the trail, and later at home. They were right.

I slept in a hammock for the first time in high school (late 80's) while visiting a college. Made several hammocks 20 years ago and slept on one after college while renting a home - to cheap to buy a bed and no money anyway. About 6 years ago I picked up a GT double and started taking it with me on charter flights so I could have a place to relax while waiting for passengers. Picked up a second one about 3 years ago because the kids wanted to join me when I put mine up at home. Just now looking to use it for camping. Easier than a tent (of which I have too many!) and less space/weight. Working on the UQ and bug net, but otherwise ready to go.

What made me a hanger was simply laying in an ENO hammock. Like the English slogan printed on a package of Thai Rice Stick I once had: "Once Tried, Ever Wanted".

What, or who, pushed me to the "next level" and landed me here, was Shug. I swannee.

"Mmmmmmm... that spinntex crinklin' makes me a might nervoust."

I had been sleeping on the ground for years as a camper. Last year I went to my favorite spot and saw several people hammock camping. I thought it looked great so I bought my first hammock and have not looked back!

I was planning a kayak trip and realized that finding level camping shots was going to be a challenge. I noticed Hennessy Hammocks in one of the paddling magazines and gave it a go.
