    Double SMC rings (Buckle) suspension

So I have tried the SMC rings as seen here. I first tried the 1.5" diameter ones that are silver and look like the pic below.

    http://www.rei.com/product/471123/smc-descending-ring

And they ovalled out and began to split. It appears these were rolled out of a flat and not forged.

So we bought these to replace them with:

    http://www.rei.com/product/799957/sm...escending-ring

Much more robust a little smaller diameter and appear not be a rolled material. The issue with these is that when I run my suspension line through them, in a buckle arrangment, (around and back through between the two) and tension the line they like to try and go inside one another. I am wondering if this has to do with the semi-flat side.

I am thinking about trying these next

    http://www.rei.com/product/745608/om...ic-rappel-ring

First I will attempt to use a continuos loop "half hitched" through the red rings and then run my suspension line through them and see if the roll up on themselves.

Any thoughts are welcome. We are trying to come up with the quickest pitch and tear down. We have tried the Whoopie slings and could not get them to release. Yes we watched all of the how tos and absolutely love the concept. We just could not get it to release using 1/8" Amsteel.

Is your heart set on rings?

Are you planning on using Amsteel with the rings? I have never tried it, but some here on HF counsel against it due to the pinching that takes place between the rings. I am sure some other, more experienced hanger will chime in.

Try the rings from SlingRings.com, I have the 3in aluminum rings and just ordered the 2in.

Yeah those burgundy SMC rings will not work, for gripping webbing or amsteel.

As far as the SMC rings that you first used, I am blown away that you ovalled them. I used those rings for a dozen hangs (pinching amsteel) and never had a problem.

IMO, the best suspension option out there is the webbing/cinch setup from Warbonnet. The webbing is the perfect middle ground between lightweight and plenty strong. The cinch buckles seem to be recently updated and are even lighter than before. The amsteel dogbone makes connecting to hammock body a breeze.

I know it's not the 'homegrown' suspensions setup that I bet you were looking to implement...but it's a great setup.

OTOH, you might consider revisiting the first SMC rings you used, because with those you can use it to pinch amsteel or webbing no problem. Yes there are longevity issues with pinching the amsteel, but there are ways around it.

The key with the SMC rings is to keep them aligned. If you are using cordage to secure the rings to the hammock it helps to larkshead the cordage more than once around both rings in effect creating a prusik. More wraps keep the rings aligned which in turn provides a better compression on the webbing and one ring will not go into the other. It's also a good idea to back up the cinching with a slippery half hitch.

Not using the Amsteel to be pinched. Using the Amsteel to connect the rings to the webbing that came with my Hennessey. Then using the factory Hennessey suspension rope through the rings to lock everything in place. I read all about the "pinching" of the Amsteel and how it would degrade it's performance.

    Bubba,

You answered my prayers. That was exactly my next move. Thank you for your affirmation. I will try that first thing this evening. Not using webbing just the factcory suspension from Hennessey.

I'm also stunned that you ovalled the SMCs. Those puppies are climbing rated to like 3k pounds.

I use them all the time for hanging.

Your welcome. I actually put so many wraps around my rings I could barely get them open. They were so tightly together I did not need a back up hitch.

Are you going to use the garda hitch with the stock rope? It compresses the cordage which can damage or weaken it so use caution.

Actually I would think that the stock Hennessy rope may be too thick to work right with those rings....

    Let us know!
