I recall reading somewhere that the slings were invented in China a long time ago by a man named Whu Pe. Don't know if its true but since the Chinese invented the finger puzzles that work on the same principle, it makes sense.

There is a guy here in the forums that I thought brought them here, named, "Opie"....turned into whoOPIE. He sold his business, but still is on here.

    Or, I am wrong.

The Chinaman's name was Wu Pe, which translated means One That Hangs in Trees Like a Monkey.

Wasn't it his brother Wi Pe who developed the tandem porta-john?!?

Tell me again, what does this thread have to do with hammocks?

No, Opie started a splicing business selling them, but he definitely did not invent them or bring them to HF.

We first saw them in this thread from a member named ZA206 who had seen them from arborist use, and used UCR's on his hammock. It took quite a while for them to catch on, but splicing (and not just whoopies) has changed hammock suspensions a LOT since then.

As for how they got their name...you'll have to ask someone in the arborist community I guess.

Any idea what they're used for in the arborist community?

Not from personal experience. But I did find this on Wikipedia -

A whoopie sling is an easily adjustable rope sling designed for tree pruning or tree removal. The whoopie sling works by wrapping the sling around the trunk of a tree or a heavy load bearing limb and pulling the end of the rope within the sling through a spliced choker. By adjusting the size of the eye in the rope through the choker the user is able to adjust the length of the sling constricting around the tree without needing knots. It is also becoming more common (usually in smaller diameter) for suspending hammocks during hiking or camping.
