    Ever hung from a door?

Can my door take the weight of me in my hammock? What I've done in my dorm room before is wrap a strap around the door (as if it were a tree) then close the door and it's been fine. But, that's concrete walls and metal door frames. Can I do the same thing at home with what appears to be a less sturdy door/door frame?

The door latch may be the weakest link in your example. I doubt you would pull hinges off. A better method may be to wrap around a 2x4 that extends beyond the frame dimension, this way the door itself is not stressed or in play at all. I've done something similar to this at a hotel with success. I did create a pole to act as a prop so the strap stays up where it belongs.

I have never tried it, so I don't know for sure, but I do a lot of construction so I have a somewhat educated opinion. I would really recommend that you not try it. Normal, hollow doors are not very strong, and assuming the door even held, it might do damage to the hinges.

If you decide to try it, I'd be interested in hearing how it works for you. I certainly wouldn't, though.

Just saw this. 2Q's probably right that the latch may be the weakest link, but I'm not that confident in the other links, either. Another idea you might try is one of those pull-up bars that screw into the door frame and then tyeing to that.

    Try at your risk, though

My first indoor hang was by a door latch... Don't ask how I did it, it was scary. Don't do it

Ah..yes a 2x4. That would be better. I was going to attach the other end to my pullup bar, I just don't have two of them. I'll see what I can come up with. Thanks for the idea

Thought I had a picture of this. Should have used 3/4" conduit though with a stronger sleeve holding the two sections together.

THIS thread shows a guy hanging from a doorway at work.

It looks like quite a sturdy door, but I'd probably chance a set up like that on any reasonably well fitted door.

I'd be VERY careful if you try it, and I wouldn't do it on a normal home door. Someone a while ago pulled down a pair of French doors onto him and his daughter. Might just spring for a stand, make a tensegrity, etc.

It all depends on the quality of construction - I've done some demolition work, and seen indoor doors where the frame could be pried free from the studs with a total of three or four nails holding them in place, and the screws holding the hinges in place were so short they barely made it past the frame. I've seen others that were held in place very securely, and if you made sure the stress was focused on the hinge side, you would be completely fine.
