I'm just hoping that we will arrive after the rain on Friday and get out before the rain on Sunday. I'm guessing high teens or low twenties for Friday night with a brisk sunny hike Saturday followed by mid-twenties in camp. All of which sounds pretty good as I have not seen high teens or mid-twenties in decades.

    Walter,
Have a good trip. I seriously thought about joining you, but it's a long drive, and family plans preclude it anyway. Bear in mind that Doctari, Bonsaihaiker, Chickadee, and I believed the weather report that the rain would change to snow at noon, which is why we hiked Wilburn Ridge in rain and freezing rain. It finally switched to snow after we reached the Wise Shelter. Don't make our mistake.

    Dave,

    Wish you could make it!
This one should contrast a good bit with Mt. Rogers. Foremost, there are no streams deep enough to worry about on this route.
I'll have my Snugpak Patrol Poncho and some gaiters. Chances of getting wet are pretty slim, and the Snugpak nonbreathable actually vents better than any WPB jackets that I have. The Snugpak also does not have open sides like a normal poncho, as it has sleeves.

Freezing rain is never all that fun to hike in, but hopefully we can apply some of the lessons learned from your experience. Since most of my insulation is down, I'll bring my Wiggy's jacket along. I figure if all of the other stuff gets wet, I'll have a synthetic layer capable of handling the below forecasted low along with some other heating options. I'll be toting my Zippo hand warmer as well, as I find it produces much more heat than the chemical warmers and does wonders to return dexterity to frozen fingers along with an ability to warm up a core to some extent.

    That looks pretty good actually.

Work is starting to become annoying. Looks like I will either be hiking up very late friday night, or just plan on catching up on the trail to Overmountain on Saturday.
It could be that the purpose of my life is merely to serve as a warning to others.

Anyone given any thought to the shuttle situation? It sounds like all of the cars will be at Carvers Gap.
