    speaking of over shoes

I'm thinking the ones you may leave at home are the super duper Neos? I'd like to find some very lightweight shell over boots with minimal bottom to slide around camp in. Even my much-less-than-your Neos are significant on the scale.

    Intended sleep system for me=
    HNO Graf Hammock Sock
    Leighlo 5/50 underquilt
    Double layer Traveler
    1/8inch torsoe ccf
1/2 inch footbox ccf that doubles as pack support and forms a tube in the footbox
    AHE super sock flamethrower socks
    Warbonnet Winter Mamba (2oz overfille)
    Montbell Permafrost just in case
    Nunatak down pants

    And a lot of calories!

It would have to drop another 20 degrees for me to consider bringing the down pants. My Neos Navigators are great when there is moderate snow cover. The expanded surface area is just enough to keep from having to completely posthole in in the snow. It also has the added benefit of letting me just wear trail runners inside them. The ice studs help as well. However, at nearly 4 pounds, I do NOT want to be having them strapped on to my pack.

I'll wait a few more days to see if the forecast changes before I decide.

My Wiggy's Sunwalkers are waterproof with 3/8" ccf for a midsole. Not as compressible as down booties, but more fail-proof and arguably warmer.

Then again, grocery bags would suffice for an overboot.

Granted I'm a RHK greenhorn, but what about the wind chill? I hope to use some of the gear that the Ber roched me into getting.

I'm sure it'll be windy at RHK. Windchill will be more of a factor during the hike than under a tarp. I prefer that the wind not be too high on the balds. That makes for tough trudging.

The wind up on the balds can be, for want of a better term, exciting. But once you get in the trees, it aint too bad. All this from one hike up there, but yea.

(click for the vid, you can't hear a **** thing I say, which is kinda the point lol)

As an aside, I am looking at picking up a sock before I head up. Trying to keep my pack weight as low as possible while still being comfortable, and a 10 degree bonus for a 8-12 ounce sock seems a good way to do it.

Kinda hope to avoid the whole snowshoe issue, since all I have are the gigantic USGI monsters. Going up those hills in those things is not my idea of fun.

Unless temps get closer to 0, I plan on running my "regular" coldweather kit:
    KAQ winter Jarbridge UQ
Thermarest Zlite pad for the foot area
    Golite TQ
    GT "Ultralite" (or thereabouts) hammock
(if I get a sock in time/if the rain holds off) my new ZPacks asym diamond tarp.
Clothing will include the usual layering, lots of fleece and synthetics, with Marmot raingear as my outer shell.
Oh, and a bottle of something at least marginally acceptable.

If it looks to be down near 0, I'll add another pad, and another TQ. And hope thats enough.

Aiming for a pack weight under 20#. Wish me luck.

    MisterD

So you're coming! Good to hear that.
What kind of sock? Socks are good at RHK.
Love the pic, been to that spot many times....don't think we'll linger there for long Saturday but maybe a photo op for the group.

It is a short vid. Nice example of the mic being totally overloaded by the "breezy" conditions.

I am leaning toward the Warbonnet sock. I use a blackbird anytime I am not being a gram-weenie, so a sock from the same guy seems like a good idea.

My hope is (and I havent tested this in the field yet) that the sock will give a little extra weather protection for anything that gets under the uber-small tarp. It will be a while before I can afford a full size cuben tarp, this one was kind of a lucky gift.
