I use the bowline for everything. I remember in the scouts my Scout Master showed us how to tie the bowline with one hand with some rope wrapped around your waist.

He tied a rope to the rafters, stood on the edge of a table and wrapped the rope around his waist and fell backwards. Before we knew it, he tied the knot so fast and was just hanging there.

I don't think the weight will even be a consideration, a stainless hog ring is only going to be a cpl grams at most..

A figure 8 tied on a bite (loop) sounds more secure than my usual overhand.

I was looking at hog rings, but the weight consideration did x my mind. decided not, and much happy with the bowlines. have my uq hanging now, I have been waiting for this moment for ever. Cant wait for the whoopies, amsteel and hardware from Dutch to arrive, oh, and the peak bag and UQProtector from 2QZQ, Coyote brown should blend nice with the fall foliage around these parts.

I saw a similar but less dramatic demonstration in scouts as well. I remember them saying 'if you are stranded on a cliff face and you are lowered a rope this is the knot you tie.' That got my attention.

A bowline has always worked for me. I usually go "around the tree" twice just to make sure it doesn't slip.

In rope, bowline will fail if it is loaded and unloaded enough. Shock cord won't due to it's stretch.
Figure 8 loop is good if you want to untie someday, single overhand loop works great too..

Shock cord loops with hog rings

I purchased some small stainless steel hog rings from West marine, crimped them tight and put a short length of heat shrink over the top. I have the same loop on the loose end. These are attached to my doors. I set the length so they could be easiliy clipped to the other doors tri ring with a tiny plastic sbiner and keep them stowed under the tarp with no slop. I made 2 with loops not attached for the pull outs about 6' long. I plan to larkshead one and sbiner the other when using the pull outs. I will give this a couple of trips and see if it works for me.

I am becoming disenchanted with my SLS as recommended by Dejoha. I dont think there is a more easily adjusted tarp suspension, but I can't pack it up without the tarp getting all over the ground. Not what I want in a muddy situation. I need to play with it some more.
