compression bags and the new river uq

i'm wondering if its ok to use compression bag on the new river under quilt. it would be very helpful to get it a little smaller. i want to make sure that it won't hurt the fluff. it would only be compressed while traveling. at home i keep it in a plastic bin along with my sleeping bag.

What I practice: avoid over compressing down; avoid storing down in plastic, allow it to breathe.

I would think that synthetics are more sensitive to oversruffing. I don't even bother with a stuff sack, just goes in the pack.

I did make a lager double le sided stuff sack. Now I don't take my pillow or uq off of my hammock.. it all gets stuffed, I made it too big but it takes up empty space in the pack better that way...

    John,

What are the dimensions of your stuff sack? I'd like to try packing everything into one large stuff sack for two reasons; to save room and to speed up setting up/tearing down my rig.

    Sincerely,
    Dave-O

When I used the New River quilt,,I also,,just throw it in the pack liner inside the pack and throw everything on top of it,,worked great for me, I don't use compression sacks for anything anymore. I do the same thing for the Jarbidge 50 I sometimes use. Let everything just mash it down. I store everything either hung up or in large bags that allow my down and synthetics breath either cotton or silnylon. If you don't have any bags,,just use a cotton pillow case. Works great for storing quilts.

I used to use compression sacks on everything cause I thought it would save space. However like others above have said, I find that stuffing it in a pack liner helps to fill voids in the pack and essentially creates a more even pack instead of one that is bulging all over from the bowling ball size compression sacks.

I put my New River (long version) in a Granite Gear medium compression sack. It's very lightweight, but it's starting to rip out after about a year of monthly use. This week, I had a hydration bag leak in my pack and it got my UQ pretty wet. Luckily, my Marmot down sleeping bag (I use it as an overquilt) was in a Sea-to-Summit e-Vent compression sack, which is very water-resistant; almost waterproof. I just ordered another e-Vent for my UQ.

Another note: the Granite Gear sack uses round cord for the compression buckles. When they were wet and then froze, they were very difficult to use. The flat web straps on the Sea-to-Summit bag were still easy to use.

    Take it easy,
