    Whoopie sling construction

While I'm awaiting my hammock, I figured I would pick up some cord and play around a bit with some of these alternative suspension methods. I plan to stick with the adjustable webbing for the time being but I'm interested in the other stuff too.

I was wondering what tools you guys have found helpful in construction of your slings and continuous loops? I've seen stuff about #2 knitting needles for helping to spread the cord and 24ga florists wire for creating your pulling tools. Anything else I should consider?

I do not use any tools other than my hands, it may take longer but then I don't have to buy any tools for it.

Several folks usea Dritz Loop Turner that you can find at JoAnn's for a few bucks. My wife is big on thread arts so I didn't have to buy one! That's what I use on 7/64". On smaller stuff I use about a 22 guage guitar string. Good luck.

I don't see how you can make a whoopie sling without any tools, whether it is a needle, or a piece of wire. I can't remember what the tool is called, but for amsteel I have what I think is called a loop turner, bought from Walmart in the sewing section. I also have used, and still do for zing-it, a piece of steel leader wire, bent in half, also from walmart, in the fishing dept......RR

Here's a video splicing a fixed eye with a locked brummel in zing it. I used the following "tools":

-a sharpie marker to (wait for it) make marks
-home made "knitting needle" to open holes in the strands
-a nail set to further open holes...a ball point pen would be fine
-a piece of heavy copper wire (standard house wiring with insulation removed) used as a "knitting needle" to open the bury
-fine wire folded in half to pull the bury
-small sharp pick to pick strands for the taper (use any pointy object or you finger nails)
-very sharp knife and wood block

Mostly just junk laying around the house.

Another video using a Dritz Loop Turner to demonstrate pulling a bury in 7/64" Amsteel.

And maybe a knife, unless you have very sharp teeth.

    Electrical wire

I've been using some 14gauge electrical wire I had out in the garage. The ground wire is excellent to use as a fid.

Best thing is that it was free.

Reviving an old thread, I know. I assume the above posts refer tools used for 7/64 Amstel. It is not clear if these can also be used for 2.2mm dynaglide.

What do you use for the 2.2mm line?

.020 safety wire, folded in half is what I use on everything from 1/8th Amsteel to braided mason's line. Copper wire, guitar string, leader wire....it's all similar stuff. I find the safety wire just a little tougher than the rest so it lasts longer. The rest of the stuff is nice to have and makes splicing a little easier but it isn't really needed. Oh yeah!!! A sharp knife, gotta have a sharp knife. I guess you could gnaw Amsteel in half but the slobber would make splicing messy.
