    Moving Blanket as UQ

Has anyone looked at or tried moving blankets instead of poncho liner for an underquilt? I went to the surplus store and they wanted 40$ for that poncho liner. I have moving blankets... just not sure of the material/moisture etc.

Moving blankets - depend on if they're the real heavy ones or the lighter ones. The heavy ones will be a pain trying to hang them with shock cord - they sag terribly. The lighter ones will work, but I don't know to what temps they're good for.

Search the net for a poncho liner - they can be found for 20 bucks or so. Here's an example http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/c....aspx?a=372697
I got in a fight one time with a really big guy, and he said, "I'm going to mop the floor with your face." I said, "You'll be sorry." He said, "Oh, yeah? Why?" I said, "Well, you won't be able to get into the corners very well."

Good point about the weight. This moving blanket weighs about seven pounds

    Have you tried pads yet?
Start saving for a proper UQ.....synthetic is a bit less expensive.

My sleeping bag is a Big Agnes with integrated pad sleeve. I have a tendency to get cold on the sides of the hammock, especially my feet. SPE looks like it might help.

I'm also considering a reflectix pad around my feet.

I would think that the design of the pad to be stout, compact, and abrasive resistant would not inhance it's ability to provide warmth through any sort of loft.

Dude...that is a high priced surplus store! We can get brand new poncho liners around here for just over 20 bucks. You checked E-bay?

All good ideas here. Part of my looking at the moving blanket was that I have 6 of them doing nothing... I love DIY projects especially when I spend no money.

I'm now thinking if I am going to spend some money, maybe I just save for a little while and make my own down underquilt. Patience... patience...

If you can find a cheap down pillow, you can buy a shell from underquilts.com and have a nice underquilt less than $100. I bought a pillow for $20 and the shell for $50. Add in the shock cord and I only had about $80 for a very nice quilt, plus enough down left for another project. Just an idea.
