Welcome to the site. You are treading on dangerous grounds here. Once you step into the DIY trap, you will be stuck.

    There are two basic options.

The first is to order a table cloth from tableclothsfactory.com. Do a search and you will see how simple it is and the sewing is already done for you. Just add suspension and you’re ready to start.

The second option is to just start surfing this section (get ready for a little bit of info overload). There are threads that describe different methods of construction and they are stickied at the top. If you track down PapaSmurf's website, he has a table created for what the different fabrics can hold for both single and double layers. There are plenty of cottage venders here that offer many different fabrics for sale, not just completed hammocks.

    Good luck,

A double layer 1.9 would hold you just fine. (Joann's ripstop is 1.9, and 50% off coupons are commonplace.) I believe Papa Smurf did some testing and found the polyester tablecloth would hold more than your weight. From a suspension view, 7/64ths amsteel or strap suspension is no problem as long as you follow the 30 degree rule of thumb.

The only other first consideration is length... unless you for are trying to go lightweight... i'm just under 6 feet tall, and I make my hammocks 10'6" -11' long (before hemming)

    Welcome to the addiction!

Basically, don't hang your hammock too tight. The suspension lines should be 30.degrees below horizontal or.the forces on the suspension can tear apart your hammock...

I'm 325# and 6'1". I've been running my setup for about 4 years now. It's a homemade gathered end made with double layer 1.9oz ripstop nylon from JoAnn's and my straps are the orange 400# ratchet tie-down straps from Harbor Freight.
You'll find me hanging somewhere in the sunshine state.
