I had a problem getting my ground hog staked out of the frozen ground this past weekend. I also ended up breaking one in half. Then SilentOrpheus just said to give it one more whack in and voila.... they slid right out.

Me
I camp in bear country and I am a bear Burrito.
I encountered this problem this weekend at the NJ Winter Hang and was totally unprepared. I arrived at night so logs/branches weren't an option (I didn't want to spend my evening searching a picked-bare campsite).
NJRedneck loaned me a hammer, but my aluminum spikes just bent. Then I tried a thicker aluminum gutter spike - they bent even easier. Finally, I used some really cheap, thin stakes that came with a 12x12 Guide Gear tarp I bought last year. Surprisingly, these cheap, skinny stakes hammered right into the ground with zero bending and minimal resistance from the frozen soil. They didn't compress the soil and sliced right through. Not the result I expected.
So I know these cheap skinny stakes work in frozen soil, but I'm still trying to get my head around whether a stick or log would work as a hammer. I have my doubts.
these are the same spikes i had to use on Key West, a solid coral island, after i had similar issues w/ common tent stakes/pegs
the campground office sold them, knowing what the guests would experience
i, now, carry a full set in my kit, for ANY like contingencies
though they add weight to my kit, a good night's sleep is worth it

Try Vargo's Titanium Nail Pegs
I used these at the NJ Winter Hang last weekend (same as SilvrSurfr). The ground was frozen solid. Folks were breaking MSR Groundhogs left and right. The titanium nails hammered right in and were easy to pull out 40+ hours later (no pee or hot water needed).
