    Burrow0* or Burrow20* ? ? Any thoughts ?

Back from a wonderful NJWinterHang happy to 3* in my vanCamping-DIY-heavy-double-fleece-TQ-+downjackets+.

    Love winter hanging ! !

Want to upgrade my backpacking TQ.
Have a DIY IX-multi-layer-season-adjustable-TQ that has successfully taken me to the occasional below 30* with wearing my down clothes.

On the drive home from the NJWinterHang decided to buy a Burrow0* since I like winter camping so much in NJ NY PA.

Then thinking : perhaps Burrow20* would give a wider range, into the shoulder seasons.
Burrow0* may be overkill if venting it is necessary most of the time .

    Any thoughts ?

A 20* is (usually) the best choice for a first quilt. If you already have one, though, that runs around 30*, I'd think the 20* is too close to it, unless you're really going with something to save space/weight. If that's less of an issue, I'd personally go with the 0*, or perhaps at the most, a 20* with 2-3 ounces of overstuff to bring you down to around 10.

A possible solution, good to bridge the temps.
Space and weight is always a consideration but in winter comfort is first.

    Thanks, breyman.

    From the Hammockgear site :

Should I consider over stuffing my quilt?

Some people get it to stabilize the goose down insulation a bit. While it shines as a high lofting, very efficient substance, it lacks much substance (which is why it is so packable) and therefore tends to shift if one is not careful when packing and unpacking it from its stuff sack. Over stuffing also helps maintain loft a bit better if it will be long periods of extended use with infrequent washings.

Thinking hard and imagining what conditions I will be backpacking in.
Burrow0* will insure the simplest setup for 1 or 2, Jan and Feb camping trips.
Burrow20* will cover March with or without extra down clothing, but Jan and Feb will likely need much additional down and insulation.

Have exchanged emails with Stormcrow, he was helpfull.
    Now I must imagine.

If you love winter hanging get the HG 0* it's my favorite of all my quilts. I will use it from 40* and lower. Above 40 I will use my summer set. Hardly ever use my 20*. That said, I'm a cold sleeper and like lots of warmth. I also like to have the margin of safety should the temps go lower then anticipated.

I'm mixed about overstuffng. I'd say no more then 20% if you do. Good luck choosing!

    Sidewinder,

    That is very helpful.
You have both and generally select the 0* to bring. Hardly ever use my 20*

40* is an interesting divide, it is also somewhat a point of safely switching to a warmer weather setup.

Thanks for your point of view.

Yeah I'd say if you like winter camping go with the 0. A 20deg with 900 fill is actually a 15deg.

The point that I haven't seen on this thread yet, is that it's mostly about what's on bottom. You can often go with a 0* on bottom and use a 40* on top, as the UQ is where most of the difference comes from. Even down to near 0*. On the other hand, trying to use a -25* TQ and a 40* UQ, would quickly make you freeze.

On another note, I'd argue that you could get a UQP for $35 and that would add another 8-10*, as it really cuts down on the convection heat loss.

    Boomer,

    Yes the underquilt is major.

Winter UQ combo : DIY-IX-multi-layer-multi-season-adjustable-backpacking-UQ plus Speer Snugfit.

This has worked well into the teens in the past. Worked well at NJWinterHang's 3*.

    A) DIY-IX base layer : ripstop+IX-sewn-head+foot (not sides, 40"wide, extra10" on each side stitched to itself, but not to ripstop; free to trap air) channels head+foot, cordlocked-tight; channels on side with shock cord
    B) Floating IX-layer #1 and Floating IX-layer #2 ( added to suit temp ) attached with ties in corners, sometimes both together; summer use IX-between layers in WBBB
    C) ripstop with channels 4 sides : protective cover under Snugfit in winter; UQ base with floating layer(s) in warmer weather; good windcover when not using tarp.

When vanCamping :This set up is also divided into two complete sets. Changing them up as my husband and I need.
The Snugfit (a piece of art/sculpture) bought for my husband so he would hang in cooler weather with me.
The DIY was intended as a prototype sized for him, works well, so I never got around to making a shorter set up for me.

Backpacking TQ is combo of IX that has worked well with down clothing to just below 30*.
At the NJWinterHang was using the heavy-double-fleece-TQ used for vanCamping.

    HamMike,

    Thanks for the opinion.

That seems to be the logical choice, if I like winter camping.
