im using a plastic toggle for mine. they are plastic tubes, not positive on the size, but they work great. after roughing up the outside a little bit with some sandpaper the slipping stopped! and it holds really well i was afraid it wouldn't be strong enough, but it is. seams like a pretty good idea. i took out my whoopie slings and instead i have some "dogbones" ran through the ends of my hammock, then used them to attach to the toggle. seams like it would be a good idea. just not sure if i like it better then the whoopies just yet. gonna "sleep on it" this weekend and see what i think.

    Cheap Dowel

Also be careful about the hole diameter you drill, it needs to be as small as possible while allowing the line to pass through. Also aluminum rod works also, but you may need to tie the clove hitch to prevent slipping depending on how smooth the finish of the aluminum is.
I'm certain it was the cheap dowel. It almost looks like compress plywood. I had the hole size right on, and right in the middle. It looked so cool & ready to go until I got in. That baby snapped in two so fast that part of it is in Hawaii. Here's what's left of it.

What are these "dowels" you speak of? The woods are full of oak and hickory trees.

Born & Raise In East L.A.

I was born and raised in East L.A. I can tell the difference between the sound of a zip gun & a AK 47. I know the difference between the Avenues and 18th St Gangs. However, when it comes to trees, I'm lucky to tell the difference between a Palm tree and Petrified wood. Hence, the reason I ended up on my back side with my legs in different time zones.

    through the grain

I am probably going to give this a try soon, but I would offer one suggestion....

When drilling the hole through the wood dowel, I would go through the grain instead of with the grain. Probably won't make too much difference, since the stress on the dowel is more from compression, but going with the grain makes it easier to split the dowel.

Not quite up to the OP's standards, but great keyboard work!

I'm with ya on this. The original Idea is cheap super light and easy on the Line er um i mean rope. I can make a dowel pretty cheap an only need a drill, bit, and some sand paper. Also, you can flare the ends of a dowel by sanding the middle down. On the same note, I can understand why someone would want a nice dutch version. "Support the cause, buy Dutch!!"

I think this a good idea but I like how light my suspension is. So I am not going to change any time soon.
