There are two questions that I want to explore.

    1. Will this work with Dynaglide?

    2. Can the half hitch be a slippery half hitch and be secure?

    3. It appears that all the friction holding this up is concentrated on one single overlap. (I know that is 3 things and it's not a question) I'm just scared!

Just hang lower than usual and pile up lots of leaves under your hammock before you get in. And don't forget to set up the video camera first!

    Funny you should ask:
    1. Ive got a set made up using dynaglide and aluminum toggles that I have done an initial trial (means I hung it in the back yard to see if my butt hit the ground) It worked fine. I hope to do some field trials later this year.
    2. Ive tried the slippery half hitch, it worked initially but its really more aggravating to tie than it would appear. I also just dont trust it and cant explain why. Ive also found there really isnt a need for it because as soon as you unload the suspension and pull up on the free end the loop will slip off the end of the toggle- a little practice and its second nature.
    3. Yes, the point of overlap is the main point of friction, but if youre worried about it slipping, you can flip a second half hitch over the opposite end for a clove hitch, with the same results on unloading and pulling the free end. Because the point of overlap resides next to the hole, its important that the diameter closely match that of the cord so as not to pull the underlying cord into the hole.

On another note, ive also done a figure eight around the toggle as you would around a boat cleat with a half hitch as well. There is some initial slip as the cord seats, but I havent done a long term on that method either. I prefer the simple half hitch.

And on yet another note, for those worried about the hammock jumping off the toggle, take the free end and wrap once around the hammock's continuous loop then cinch the loop up to the toggle and it closes the hammocks loop holding it in place (though giving one more thing to undo). I personally havent had the hammock fall off...yet.

As I believe it was the Munchkins in the Land of Oz that sang, "Ding-dong, the whoopie's dead..."

    Could it be????

Wow - good drawing and a great idea!

And thanks - I'm not a knot person and the half hitch is just about my speed...

    Interesting idea. I like it.

For what it's worth, I tried a similar idea using both Amsteel and Dynaglide a couple of months back.

Continuous loop on the hammock. Run a single line of either Amsteel or Dynaglide from your treestrap through the continuous loop on the hammock and tie off with 2 slippery half hitches (think slippery half hitch then run another slippery half hitch through the "loop" created by your first hitch).

With Amsteel, it worked fine. Dynaglide snapped in two and left me on my butt with a pretty nice bruise.

Mind you, my hitch was biting on the Amsteel continuous loop whereas yours is biting on the toggle which has a much larger diameter than Amsteel. That may have affected things in some way.

Funny but this is how I tie up my bear bag PCT style.

For some reason, this is all that I could see out of the viewfinder on the camera.
