KayakCarl have you gone to philmont before. I am also going for the first time as well in 2014. I have been ready a crazy amount of info over at backlackinglight in their philmont forum section. Plus I also have a thread started in Roundtable talking a little about tents. I am looking at a tarp tent style though I have yet to narrow it down yet. Still have time on that one.

I am not really sure of the reason why you need a floor other than speculation. As I have read so far the reason it is needed is because if the fine dirt there. When the wind blows it can get everywhere. So they you would not only want a floor but some why to seal off the inside from anything getting in as best as possible. Again I don't for fact just a conclusion of articles I have read.

Oh, that seems logical. I like not having the floor due to clean up, however it would be nice to have short walls with doors attached so one could seal your tarp off against the ground. A tent with everything but a floor.

Lost_Biker made this bugnet with a tub after scottpash posted his original idea for a bug net that could double as a go-to-ground bivy. I'll link to the last page because it has the best pictures of the final design Lost_Biker came up with.

Hey Carl, I was doing a search for flooring for my tarp when I found this interesting info.

Here is the website for this tub http://www.bearpawwd.com/shelters_fl...tub_floor.html

I'm thinking rattlesnakes may be the reason for the requirement of using tents with continuous floors in them at Philmont.

Although I think this is a neat idea which definitely has it's place, it's not for me. The thrill for me in hammock camping is feeling the rocks, grass, dirt, etc. under my feet when I swing em out of the hammock. Hanging inside a tent or similar setup (somewhere between a tarp & tent) would have advantages as pointed out in the previous few posts: sealing out rattlesnakes, or making a hot-tent. But it still seems to take away from the challenge of being somewhat exposed to nature, and that's what I like --- within limits of course!

Maybe I'm a wuss, but if the conditions are that bad that I need more than a tarp and sock, I'll wait for a nicer day to hit the woods!

... but I will be following this thread to see where it leads. Always open to innovation.

Here is the youtube link about a guy that made a "Hot tent and hot hammock shelter out of an MSR twin brothers tent. It does not have a floor but if you check out all of his video links he actually shows the setup with his Hammock inside the tent.
