Removable doors VS 4 season tarp

I'm debating between the Hex Tarp and Winter Tarp on backwooddaydreamer. I have some material that I believe is silnylon, and I could make door kits. The question is; should I?

Should I can tote around a winter tarp in the milder 3 seasons and be prepared for the monsoon, or carry a hex tarp with extra hardware and cord for doors?

I have a Speer Winter tarp that I carry all yr. If you are going to carry the doors anyway why not just get one with doors attached. You can put the tarp in the porch mode or use the doors to block the wind

As I was typing that, I began to see the situation much clearer. Sorry for posting a silly thread.

Is there a way to delete it?

I don't think it's silly. I had the same dilemna when I ordered my tarp. I got the Superfly with attached doors... But I'm open to the possibility of selling it if after a year I find I don't need it. Only time will tell for me.

The resale value of the Superfly convinced me to just go for it.

HEHEHE! This is all I think off when I read "SuperFly". But seriously though I like warbonnet's Superfly tarp design. I wish the cammo version wasn't $25.00 more than their olive brown one. It doesn't appear it weighs that much more than their smaller ones. I wonder how bulky it is when it's stuffed away?

Think softball when compressed, maybe a bit smaller if you really wrench it down. The bag provided is about the size of a nalgene though... It just isn't very compressed.

It is a good question! Do you want to lug doors around in the summer when you need all the ventilation you can get? Removable doors are versatile; only one tarp to buy then again, I've heard they can be fiddly and there's the extra weight of attachments. Two tarps solve the problem, but are more costly. Then there's the cuben option where doors just don't weigh anything (almost), but then your wallet won't either!

What a great question! Too bad I don't have an answer.

It seems like every time I start to come up with a plan, there's an opinion or suggestion that adds a whole new dimension to the discussion, and I'm back to square one........WOW! I should be ashamed. If that's not a FWP (first world problem) I don't know what is.

I had the same question before I made mine. I finally came up with: make the hex tarp and eventually make doors. This way if the weather is not going to be too bad then just take the tarp, bad, cold, very wet, windy... take the doors. I still have not figured out how to attach the doors. I thought about hook and loop/Velcro and also just using a stake and clips with a shock cord tensioner.

    BWDD Hex MODS

So after a little brain stormin', I began to ask "why would I cut away so much material at the head and foot of the BWDD Hex tarp"?

If I left that extra material on, cat-cut the edges, and loaded the sides with mini-tieouts, I should have plenty of tarp to create doors from the material that would've been removed, had I followed the instructions exactly.

Then, I get the doors, but don't have to buy 2 additional yards of material.

Anyway, the red lines represent the BWDD Hex Tarp, and the blue lines represent the material that I would like to leave on there for doors.

Is this a grave mistake, or have others done this with great success?
