Is the tarp for the HH Expedition enough?

I just purchased my first hammock, a Hennessy Expedition A-Sym (bottom entry). I'm still working on making a suspension system for it so I haven't even strung it up yet, but I'm curious about the tarp/canopy that comes with it.

I'm wondering how many users of this hammock use the small tarp that comes with it? From looking at photos it seems like many, if not most, have upgraded to a larger tarp. Is the reason so many have done so that people just prefer a bigger tarp or because the stock tarp that this model comes doesn't provide adequate coverage in really bad rainstorms?

I own an 8'x10' sil nylon tarp which I'd probably bring with me so that I could have a separate dry/shaded area when I'm not in my hammock, but I'm curious how many of you here rely only on the smaller tarp that the Expedition model comes with and whether you think it provides sufficient protection in big rainstorms when you're sleeping?

    Thanks,
    - Martin

I've been through some pretty good storms with the stock fly and stayed dry, but if you get some really good sideways rain, you might get a little wet. I'd say that for "most" storms the stock fly is fine.

I did like using seperate suspension for the fly though...that helped me get rid of the slack that occured when getting in the hammock.

I like the versatility of a larger tarp over the stock. I have used the stock as a small dry area during camp at times though.

The stock tarp takes a bit more finesse in setting it up. But it has a very good track record if used properly. It is, however, effective only as a hammock tarp. If you want to use it as a patio for sitting under you will be very frustrated. I think that's why many people upgrade. But for small lightweight coverage it is fine.

I've only used the stock tarp so far but I've been fortunate not to have been in any rain storms.

Other hammocker's in my group have used the stock tarp and haven't complained about getting wet. As someone else said, you need to use some finess in setting it up for storms.

I used a HH napkin fly for quite some time before upgrading to a larger tarp. Went big for a couple of years and found myself going back to the smaller tarps. The stock HH tarps work just fine if you practice a little bit in good weather, but they do restrict you to just being in the hammock during a storm. Fine if you're sleeping, but a pain if you're not. Larger tarps just make better shelters for anything other than sleeping.

We used the stock tarps on our hammocks all last year, including during some pretty good storms. Never got wet. The small size made my wife nervous though, so I got her a Typhoon for Christmas. I'm planning to make a cat cut for my hammock. Mainly for the added doors for winter, and the patio option for when we're stuck in the rain.

For me... no. Especially in the winter, because getting wet is horrible in cold temps. In the summer I don't mind, but really all around a bigger fly is awesome because of storing extra gear, undressing, cooking, hiking with dogs, etc.
