Seam Seal Question - To Spread or Not to Spread?

    Hey Y'all,

Now that I have a silnylon tarp I need to seal the seam on the ridgeline. I'll probably use Permatex Flowable Silicon since its easy to source locally. Based on what I'e read here I know I need to run a bead along each line of stitching. My question is, should I simply run the beads or should I smear it along the stitching/seam using a foam brush (or steal a foam make-up applicator wedge from my wife or daughters)?

    Thanks,

    Steve D

I just ran a bead of permatex on my tarps and its holding up well. You really only need to fill the stitch holes and I don't think spreading it improves application.

Seam Seal Question - To Spread or Not to Spread?

You want to work it into the stitching pores. I weight the tarp or pitch it tight and then work the silicone into the ridgeline stitching brushing in both directions along the length.

Seam Seal Question - To Spread or Not to Spread?

When I seam sealed my wife's DIY tarp I spread it out using my fingers with a latex glove. For me I feel that it helped work it into the holes to help seal it more. Plus on the ridgeline it was a broader coverage to help with preventing leakage.

Now a question to those that know. What can you use to prevent the sealant to be sticky. Is there a powder you can use to be less sticky AFTER appying?

That will diminish with time. But you can brush on a light coat of climbers chalk, baby powder or talcum powder. Look for unscented if using baby pounder.

I used a cheap brush from the hardware store. In plumbing, the throw away brushes used to apply nokorode before soldering a joint.

Thats what I figured and was pretty much planning on doing. Now to figure out the best way to do it neatly (yes, I'm a bit picky but I figure if I'm investing a C-note plus a little in a tarp, I'm entitled to be a little picky... ).

I know it is effective and that is what matters.. But.. wouldn't the spray work as well?
Camp dry etc? Probably have to apply every so often but look a lot better?

I use the spray. I just hold the nozzle very close and soak the thread holes. I have 12 tarps that I maintain this way, and thus far it has been 100% successful. I also think the brush method would work, but the stickiness is a real down side. I reacoat at the beginning of each season. I buy the stuff in the off season for the following year.
