Best shape for a tarp?

I have been looking for a 10' x 10' square silnylon tarp, and have been unable to find one. I have found assymetric, cat cut, rectangular, hex...So many choices! It seems to me that a square tarp would be the most versatile. Anchor one side to the ground in windy weather, run it diagonally in nice weather, tilt one side up for a "porch"...I'd like your input...Is it not hip to be square?

OES makes square tarps..best size tho, I ever used was 10' x 12' and you can close the ends like doors in inclimate weather tho. Zpacks makes small square cuben tarps too. You can contact UGQ, and Wilderness Logics and I bet they will make you any size you want out of silnylon as well..send them a email and ask. Same for Arrowhead maybe.

One plus of the BCUSA tarps is they have loops every 2' so you can do all sorts of setups for the ground or centered for a hammock.

I saw one this past weekend at the East TX BCUSA gathering... belonged to saustin1967... don't know if he 'hangs' around here or not. regardless, we reconfigured it after i admired those loops. i was thinking of moving it over a couple feet, to make a larger porch on one side of his hammock, so we disconnected the point loops and moved down 2' to the next one, adjusting his tieouts (he had 'em on figure 9s, so it was easy). you'd have to bungi the points down to something, or they'd be flapping all night, but it was pretty cool. kajunkat has 10x10s for his 4 kids, and they work really well, but i think his were from Academy, not BCUSA. as mentioned, just wait. they'll stock back up.

I like the McCat Std (cat-cut hex) for making a porch... i tie one side really low, on a couple 18" tieouts. the two long-axis points go to the tree. and the other two are REALLY long (10-12') so i can put up a couple 6' poles and make a porch like you're talking about. at night, i move the butts of the poles in a little closer, so i can reach them while sitting up in my hammock. you might have to adjust the lines a little, as they're effectively shorter since they're leaning out. anyway, if it starts raining, you just grab the butt ends and pull them up under the hammock. at 6', they're generally heavy enough not to get blown around too badly, and they keep that side of the tarp down. have lived through some pretty nasty thunderstorms that way.

Wow, those are just like my grandfather's old canvas tarp ... except in modern fabrics.

I have one of these 9.5 x 10 tarps. It's great, tie outs everywhere, 16 oz. and under a hundred bucks. And they have sales. I think I only paid $75 for mine on sale. You can close the ends like doors and still have enough room for a 10' hammock. Or you can set it up in a Bakers Hut. It's a very good tarp.
