Ventilation is the key to reducing condensation. I was out this weekend in 22 degree weather. Quite breezy to boot. Nary a bit of condensation on ye ol' tarp. The next night was only 28 but it was very calm. Had the tarp set up in porch mode and was very close to a good flowing creek. Since there was no breeze, and moisture from the creek in the air, I had frost on the top and bottom of the tarp. Any place where warm moisture contacts frozen surfaces, this will happen. But to reduce it, keep lots of ventilation.
The beauty of sunsets,
The wind in the pines,
The mountains give these and more...
Peace of mind.
WOW! So many good suggestions!!!
Yea, I know about ventilation,,,,, Just didn't think that was the problem,,, OK, I just didn't think!
I really hate to get rid of the waterproof underquilt, but that makes sense.
COFFEE: Yea, still got the huge tarp, but I don't seal it fully when I do, and always leave one end fully open.
Next time I go out in the cold, I'll leave the tarp open more, leave the waterproof underquilt at home & all of the other tips here.
Sadly, won't be able to do any testing (probably) till next season, I work till NEXT Wed, & it's supposed to get to & stay 50ish for the weekend & beyond. But as I live in SW Ohio, that could change at anytime.
PLEASE keep the tips coming, I'm counting on you all! This is great! I am a bit concerned, but then that first time winter camping 7 years ago I was certain that I would die in my sleep from the cold, so I will grow yet again!

Took the advice of: more ventilation, no water proof underquilt, loose the sock, etc.
First night, low of 28, I got a bit chilled, not because of what changes I did so much as operator error. I had washed my UQ (by hand, dried as much as possible by air then in drier) & the suspension got mis-adjusted plus the cord that adjusts the closure of the foot end of the UQ came loose.
Night 2 got to about 25, UQ fully adjusted. I stayed warmer, & feel like I was drier. I did feel a bit cooler on my face without the BBO, but not terrible.
So your hints worked gang!
THANKS!!!
