    Learning rope basics

    Hey guys!

For anyone who is new to ropes, suspensions, rigging, etc. I am starting a series on ropework to help people out. The first blog is on rope material and construction. You can view it at: http://www.beardventures.com/2013/02...d-cordage.html

I plan on writing an article on which rope to use for what purpose, the top knots to learn, rope handling (coiling, storage, etc) and HAMMOCK SET UPS!!! With any luck I will also be blogging on my hammock set up as well.

This is a new thing for me, so if anyone has any suggestions to improve, please give me your input.

    Thanks for reading!

"Polyester is much stretchier than nylon..."

With webbing, polyester exhibits less stretch than nylon. Did you get this backwards?

I have a friend who worked for a rope supply place and did lots of splicing. I'm probably going to do a splicing video with him at some point. As a rock climber, I rely on knots. Some you use over and over. Others you don't but are still fun to know.

I read the blog. IMHO it falls far short of what we use and need here for material and construction basics. For instance most of the rope used here is UHMWPE based tubular braid not mentioned in your blog. Very little is kern mantle used for it's controlled stretch. You might want to go into when to pick hollow braid over tubular braid over twist laid over kern mantle as an example of a useful discussion. ;-) The blog is a good idea. My point is that there is a lot of information that folks should understand if they are going to do more than take what's on the rack at the local big box store.
    YMMV

    HYOH

Free advice worth what you paid for it. ;-)
