To Shelter or Not Shelter GSMNP

Initial planning for a 4 night trip in Mid June. Shuttle from Alum Cove parking area to Newfound Gap. Ice Water Springs - Peck's Corner - back to Ice Water - last night at Mt LeConte.

With the exception of Mt LeConte what can I expect in terms of shelter capacity at that time of year? North Bound thru hikers will have started mostly in March and April, having said that what should I expect?

Would I be hassled by Mr. Ranger for hammock camping outside of the shelters?

in june a lot of the thru hikers will be through that section, but you will still be required to stay in the shelters , unless they are full.
you could wait around untill it fills up , then hammock outside,
you should also be aware that the permiting system has changed this year

As a non-thru-hiker aren't you required to have a permit for each night and sleep in the shelter or at the campsite you are permitted for?

Per this thread, yes. Apparently, the GSMNP is launching a new backcountry campsite reservation system on the 13th of this month and intending to enforce it fairly strongly.

    Hope it helps!

Hang close to the shelter and they won't give you a hard time. At least, that was my experience and I ran into two of the ridgerunners while going through GSMNP. Your attitude when speaking with them makes all the difference.

Good advise. I felt like bait fish the last time at Tricorner Knob. I'm pretty sure there were as many bears as there were hikers.
