    Mississippi Hangers

I’m planning on making a trip to Paul B Johnson on the weekend of 2/23. Never have been there before and the web site was directed more to the cabins and RV type people. Anyone been lately that can give some firsthand what the primitive area has going for it. I’m sure I’ll need to bring water, right? Did the rangers give any grief about hammock use? Are you restricted to certain locations? Everybody’s opinion is welcome.

Never been there. Is it a state park? The state parks ( like Trace State Park between Tupelo and Pontotoc for ex, and Tishomingo ) where I have been are also RV dominant ( but also with cabins and primitive available ) but you don't have to use an RV at the RV sites. Many people rent those sites and put up tents either tent only or with the RVs. And I always hang a tarp and hang a hammock ( or 2 ). I have also rented one of those RV sites so my grandson ( with his grandmother ) could camp in his new tent while I hung next to them, so we had water and even power and bathrooms handy. But we have also used the primitive sites for tent and tarp/hammock, as they are less expensive.

I've taken my kids camping there before. The State Park is definately more RV oriented. The primitive area is just an area of woods just off the RV loops. This is more to my tastes and where we usually set up camp. No one gave me any trouble about my hammock. I didn't ask any special permission and no one made any comments about it.

Drifter, did you by chance ever get to hang at PBJ? I'm looking for a local place to test some new equipment next week and was curious how it would do.

No I did not go, there was a bad storm that weekend, and if I remember right Hattiesburg had some high wind damage so i missed the bullet on that one. I have no information to pass on.
