Thanks for all the advice folks! I think we have a Tandy in town. I was most concerned with buying equipment that isn't needed. Sometimes sales folks or starter kits can lead you to believe you need XYZ and I'm not sure I need that big of an investment yet.

My projects will mostly be knife case/sheath, wallets, key chains etc. nothing to crazy.

Ill keep you updated. Anyone interested in a thread to discuss tip/tricks and show work?

One of the forums that I belong to is http://www.Leatherworkers.net It's been a while since I've been on there, but I always got good advice and as with HammockForum Site never had a bad experience.

Working leather is great as it easily hands modelling and joining techniques to lighter materials usable in packing and repairs. I've done a bit of tinkering in the past with leather. I believe this was a good builder for my skill with strap work, packs and in field repairs on the trail. My sticking awl, a few large needles and waxed and poly threads are in my trail repair kit and are often used with the scouts.

I have been doing leather for the last year or so and find a very interesting material to work with. I would suggest you pick a project like a knife sheath and only buy what is needed and stay away from the kits. There are some very good books and you tubes on this subject so do some research first.

I have found that Tandy stores tend to have the best deals and have never had anyone pressure to me to buy anything I didn't want. Sign up for the monthly tandy emails and you will get some great deals. When I looked on eBay I find that the same materials could be found at tandy for much lower prices.

I am still trying to work leather into hammocking somehow. Maybe a triangle thingies or some kind of hanging storage. I am a paddler so weight is not as big of an issue.

Cheap scrap leather can be found at hobbie lobbie but make sure you look in the package for pieces big enough for the project you are working on. I also found that the needles at HB were better than Tandys.

Good luck - I would love to see your results of first project.

I may have some leather working tools from a business I had many years ago. If I can find them you are welcome to them. Let me see what I can find , and I'll get back to you.

+1 on Tandy... that is where I get most of my stuff. They will have some pretty good sales on leather. Start out with the cheap stuff until you have the patterns down on what you are working on.
