    Exped Synmat 7

    The Exped Synmat Basic 7.

While it isnt the lightest pad in the world I have heard they are very comfy and REI has a smoking deal on them this week for $39.00! I ordered the long and wide which is 25x80.

Has anyone else used a synmat while hammocking, I purchased it because I am getting starting and will need the ability to go to ground if the wife comes hiking along with me. I figured the insulation factor should make it nice for hanging too, I nice multi-function piece of kit for a smoking deal, cant lose!

I haven't tried that particular one. I do have an Exped, though, and it's a great pad. R-value is accurate and quality is very high. The SynMat you reference looks solid - maybe a bit heavy, but that's the sacrifice for the great price.

Air mattresses, such as the Exped ones, can be pretty comfy in a hammock (not as great as an UQ, but still pretty nice). If you want to go the pad instead of UQ route, I think the Exped would be a solid choice!

When I first started hanging I used a Big Agnes insulated air core, which is very similar to the Exped Synmat. It did fine down to freezing (never tried for colder). I found it worked best if under inflated a bit. That kept it in place in my single layer hammock better. If you roll a lot in your sleep, the pad will want to be on top. It would work better in a double layer hammock. It was kind of nice that the pad held the hammock sides away from my face vs. having them flop close with an UQ.

You got the wide/long for that price? You should be arrested! I only saw the short when I looked and that's still a good deal. However, its not a light pad. They make a Synmat UL that light and comfy, although don't know how well it keeps you warm.

I've tried a lot of pads and have not had much success with the long/wide ones in a gathered end hammock. Wonderful in a bridge, though.

I have a synmat 7 deluxe LW (with the integrated pump) which works marvelous in my WBRR. For Christmas this year, I got a synmat UL7 LW which also works great. I certainly don't expect to do any hangs below freezing with the UL7 LW, but it will be a great 3 season pad.

One of these days I will move to a UQ, but for now the pads work fine. The biggest issue that I have with pads is that they are not breathable and I end up with a fine layer of sweat on my back when I wake up.

I am actually looking to pick up the downmat 7. Does anyone have any experience with those?

I have a Synmat 7 LW and its great if you need to go to the floor.

I use it with the schnozzle tube and the medium size shrinkbag to pump it up and it needs only a few pumps, abt 1-2 minutes only.

Downmats are awesome, they definitely keep you warm. Just have to have a method of getting air in it not directly from your mouth.

Can you post a link to the $39 deal? The link above is the only one I see.
