backpacking/camping with a hammock and dog

Does anyone here backpack and camp with their hammock and bring along their dog? Where does the dog sleep?

I don't know how many list to backpacking light podcasts but a hiker named Trauma did the AT, CT and PCT in one calendar year with his DOG. I believe he was using a tent though.

At any rate, I'm interested in getting a 4-legged hiking buddy, so i thought i'd pose the question.

    Thanks,
    Chris

I've wondered the same thing - my dogs aren't exactly the most active guys out there, but a ten-mile overnighter would be really fun to do with those guys. I figure for a shorter trip I could carry the extra weight of a small tent for them to sleep in, because I don't like the idea of having them tied up under the rainfly all night. The only other option I can think of is having them in the hammock with me, and while the Warbonnet is pretty spacious, I am not a fan of that idea :-P

My only other concern is my medium-sized (~30 pounds) dogs' vulnerability to predators and the like. Day hiking popular trails is one thing, but backpacking in bear and coyote country with a couple of lethargic hotdog-shaped (corgi) walking snacks is a bit scary...

I hike with my Newfoundland, Misto. I've only done a few nights at a time with her. I have a Wolfpack Bonzai pack for her and she carries her food and water. She is great company and does the switchbacks much better than I. Don't tell anyone, but I let her off leash most of the time once we are past any roads, etc. If she gets too far ahead of me, she comes back to check on me to see if I am OK :^)

I bought a piece of Tyvek for her to sleep on and coaxed her under the tarp one rainy night. When I awoke in the middle of the night she was sleeping on a pile of leaves in the rain. She is a water dog lol.

BTW, I do have a Welsh Cardigan Corgi named Holly, as well. I've never taken her overnight and I don't think that I could find a pack that wouldn't drag on the ground for her. She loves day hikes though and she herds the Newfie as if she were a sheep.

My pup is tethered to the suspension lines. But he's over 100 pounds so I'm not too worried about his being a hors d'oevre for some other critter. I do think at least once he has spooked away some critter.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Sam sleeps in a cardboard box.
Flap door, hinge at top for cold weather.
Lowe’s or Minwax water base poly for wx-proofing if desired.
Light / folds flat. ‘Tri-wall’ if super cold.

    I love her to death BUT … ticks, chiggers, poison ivy, low-tide . . . .

She is an inside dog and gets a bath after each trip
but pick up a pack or walking stick …
… don’t get between her and back door.

In the process of making a dog bed (covered and insulated) for our fat-one at the house. She doesn't hike, but loves car camping. Her Mom isn't fond of the idea of her being in the hammock with her and the dog isn't fond of being away from Mom at night. Solution seems to be hanging the hammock as low as possible and setting-up the dogbed under the tarp and next to Mom. Reaching out of the hammock to pet said fatty relieves some of the separation anxiety.

Bonnie, my 35 pound English Springer Spaniel, has gone on a couple of trips with me. She sleeps between my legs in the hammock with her head out through the No Sniveller head hole.

Another option is the JRB Hammock Hut. There's plenty of room under and around the hammock and the doors can be closed.

    Regards,
