More and more interested in getting one, as I just bought a Paris Expedition pulk yesterday sp it will be very easy to bring a pelt :-)

And I can't believe there is 3 of us from Harstad on this forum!

I had no problem keeping the pelt in place. I should point out that my pad is a Mamut extreme (called bamse ekstreme here) witch is very "anti-slippery" --in lack of words..--

One irritating thing, that also happens when only pads are used, is that the pelt had a tendency o bulk upwards because I couldn't find a flat enough lay.

It seems that the reindeer hides, from sami reindeer herder,s witch not is meant for commersial/store sale has more stiffness to the leather. Maybe because it is not tanned?
The hide stayed very nicely in my hammock.

Me and my dad go deer & reindeer hunting every year and we usually send the pelts to the tannery.
I live on the southwest coast of norway(stavanger).
Have all my life been using them when we are out in the winter on ski trips and camping.
We even have them on the terras all winter when we have a BBQ etc..

What I did when I use them as an UQ is that I cut them a bit more to size and sow another piece on the end to make it a bit longer so that it goes under my feet.(I'm 6.3")

To avoid any sliding/flop I found some sticky material that I glued to the underside of the pelt so it stays very still even if I wobble around.

I would recommend you buy a high quality pelt as the skin on the cheap ones can be a bit stiff and the hairs fall off much easier

I'll post a photo when I get to it.
Cool to see norwegians on this forum.

The hides are made for different purposes. The sami usually use their hides that are stiffer/harder as a groundsheet in their lavvo's cos they are more water ressistant. Usually when you use your hide on the snow they will get soaked and very heavy, not to meantion they can freeze(but they still isolate just as good, and nothing happens to the hairs)

Apparently I´ve been taught the sami-way of using the reindeer hides Good tip getting tanned hides, though!

If I'm using a pulk I will sometimes choose the hide over an UQ as you also use it as a very comfy groundsheet around camp

Looked at some today. But they where very small. Must have been calf pelts. Not broad enough to cover the shoulders.
