Although not ideal for weight and packing, it's price and durability would be great.
Any thoughts about using two of these (link below), sewn together to make an all weather fly?

Isn't that a "space blanket"? Or have I been wrong all these years. I always have one in my pack, Folded in half it is the perfect size ground sheet for my boots and pack were I leave them under my hammock. If it was bigger I would definintely use it for a fly or tarp, but I am not one of those ultra light types.
As per my co-worker that has a couple of these, it's a standard poly tarp, but with a reflective surface on the one side.
What we call space blankets or emergancy blankets tend to be those disposable plastic sheets which are really thin, noisy and reflective on both sides. They are generally ~$1 and fit in your pocket.
They make great emergency shelters. I'm not sure how long it would last, maybe a year or so of exposure to the elements would break it down. Sewing two together would bring you close to the weight of an 5 x 7 Poly tarp 1 lb 4 oz, definitely not for gram weenies, but definitely lighter than the 8 x 10 Poly Tarp that I started with. I'd be curious to see how it turns out.
