    Our tent was once surrounded by PPines. Unzipped the tent door and a big one was staring me in the face. We had to throw rocks to finally run them off. But I never heard sounds like that, really didn't hear any sounds except for them trying to get into our gear.

    blue herons have some pretty spooky sounds, almost like manic laughter piped in on an intercom. Thank God we knew we were in their territory when we heard their noises or we would have thought the island we were paddling around was haunted

    I'd go with bear. Black Bear populations are on the rise. Bear are migrating to find more mating territories and food sources. We have bear in areas of New Jersey that have not seen them in over a hundred years.
