I suspect that the tendency of the hammock to pleat in so many small pleats is related to the absence of a few major ridges which make occupants uncomfortable. Just a theory or notion, and I may even be incorrect in how I read those photos and the multiplicity of ridges I see.
Gathered end hammocks include, in usage here, all but bridges. I have several Clarks, all have channels which I use, and they are all, to most, gathered end hammocks. The techniques of handling the ends, with or without channels, to maximize comfort, is a subject that has come up repeatedly, with some recommended, but without widespread recognition and adoption.
